The Wood St Commons
2021-2023
In February 2021 I was approached by a collective of NGOs, activists and “unconventionally housed” communities, asking for a map of who owned each parcel of land under Interstate 880 in West Oakland, California. This apparently simple request developed into a multi-year collaboration with the communities that lived across this landscape, as we negotiated the tensions between urban planning standards in geospatial science, and the social and material realities of the site - which needed to be expressed in order for consensus across communities to be found.
